Leadership training for not-for-profit groups

Holland ѨƵis offering a unique leadership training program for board members and staff of not-for-profit organizations. The Leadership Engagement Training program is a combination of in-class training and online resources and mentorship, enabling Holland ѨƵto deliver training at each participant’s convenience and reducing travel time and expense for them.

“Recognizing the deep commitment Islanders make to not-for-profit organizations, training and development for volunteers and staff must be considered a priority when building capacity and sustainability in the sector,” said Sandy MacDonald, the vice president responsible for Contract Training at Holland College.

The program, which is being funded by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the provincial Department of Rural and Regional Development, will run over three months. At the beginning of the program, participants will meet for one and a half days in eastern, central, or western P.E.I. for their first experiential retreat, where they will complete a series of course modules covering various topics and interact with expert guest speakers.  After the first retreat, participants will participate in 30-hours of online training. The program will conclude with one and a half days of in-class training.

“Not-for-profit organizations make immense contributions to our communities. Through the Leadership Engagement Training program, these volunteer-driven groups will benefit from learning and strengthening skills to best use their available human resources,” said Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA. “I am pleased to announce $67,963 in support from the Government of Canada, through ACOA, to help Holland ѨƵdevelop and deliver this program Island-wide.”

“Having access to programs such as the Leadership Engagement Training through Holland ѨƵdemonstrates the importance of supporting the volunteers and staff of our not-for-profit organizations. Members of our Regional Economic Advisory Councils regularly cite the importance of volunteers in their local communities and the Department of Rural and Regional Development is committed to supporting this program and assisting in its future successes.” said Patrick Murphy, Minister of Rural and Regional Development.

The first group of participants will start with in-class sessions on November 16 and 17 and on February 1 and 2 at Holland College’s West Prince Campus in Alberton. The second group will begin with in-class sessions on April 5 and 6, and again on June 21 and 22 at Holland College’s Montague Centre, and the third group will start September 13 and 14 and end on December 6 and 7 on the college’s Prince of Wales Campus.

Registration is $100, and seating is limited. To register for the program or for more information, contact Brodie O’Keefe by email bjokeefe@hollandcollege.com or call 902-566-9653.
